What is a
Landscape Architect?
Landscape Architects provide design and
planning services on a wide range of urban
and open space projects, including town
centres, industrial, residential and
commercial developments, streets, parks,
sports complexes and tourist resorts.
Landscape schemes prepared by Landscape
Architects consider a wide range of issues,
including traffic and pedestrian movement,
weather protection, passive and active
recreational opportunities, access and
safety, water use and reuse and planting.
Landscape Architects are committed to
creating practical, cost effective and
environmentally responsive solutions.
Why Use a Landscape Architect?
Landscape Architects are well trained. A
practicing Landscape Architect must
successfully complete a 4 to 5 year course
in Landscape Architecture at an accredited
tertiary institution, followed by a minimum
3 to 4 year apprenticeship under a
Registered Landscape Architect. This process
culminates in an examination process for
registration as a Landscape Architect with
the Australian Institute of Landscape
Architects. Further, a registered Landscape
Architect is required to undertake a
programme of continuing professional
development throughout their working life.
It is important to note that a practitioner
should not work under the title Landscape
Architect without having first completed the
above process.
This rigorous academic and professional
education system ensures that clients are
given the best possible advice for their
urban and open space projects.
