ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN COMPETITION WINNER

COFFS HARBOUR JETTY FORESHORE PRECINCT COMMUNITY BUILDING

In May 2021 King and Campbell were announced as the winner of a design competition for regional emerging Architects by the Property Development NSW appointed expert Design Review Panel, for a new iconic public building on the Coffs Harbour Jetty Foreshore. The design brief overview is for the new building to become the central community gathering place across the Coffs Harbour Foreshore Precinct that is currently under development.

After studying the existing and proposed site connections, level changes and competing user group requirements, King and Campbell’s architectural aspiration is for the built form to seamlessly integrate with the surrounding natural and parkland context in the creation of a vibrant and thriving foreshore precinct for the benefit of Coffs Harbour residents and visitors. The design’s robust organisational structure is reflective of local character and lifestyle while respecting the site’s important environmental, Indigenous and maritime roots. The public building is to be experienced ‘in the round’ within the broader park setting, with flexible spaces that engage outwardly into the landscape. Active frontages enhance passive safety and security, and the layered program of the building function responds to each façade.

The Coffs Harbour Jetty Foreshore Community Building comprises a lower ground level community storage facility, including associated amenities, storage and a food and drink kiosk; as well as an upper ground level community facility, food and drink premises and outdoor terrace. The design also includes public domain and landscape works, including access-ways and re-created natural dune themes, and the extension and augmentation of services and infrastructure.

King and Campbell are engaged to complete all stages of the project from Development Application through to Tender and Construction.

The client for the development is Coffs Harbour City Council, and the building is due for completion in June 2022.
